ST. JOHN’S WORT - The flower and its uses.
by Brittany Balser
WINTER GOT YOU FEELING DULL? Join the club. While lush forests, snowy slopes, and ocean views grace our doorstep, the dreary winter months seem everlasting. Lack of vitamin D clouds the mind and spirit, not to mention the physical toll it can take on our bodies. With all this piled atop the usual post-Christmas stresses, it’s no wonder many of us struggle with insomnia, low moods, and anxiety this time of year. Luckily, we have a different kind of sunshine to help beat the winter blues. St. John’s Wort Flower is a vibrant yellow bloom that helps brighten our temperament and bring some calm back into our lives. This natural remedy has been used by herbalists for centuries. Traditionally harvested during the summer solstice, the flowers and leaves were treasured for their antibacterial properties and would often be used to treat burns and bites. However, more recently this amazing gift of nature has effectively helped treat symptoms of mild depression and anxiety. As if we weren’t already impressed, St. John’s Wort Flower can also be a natural aid in the treatment of menstruation and menopause symptoms.
Needless to say, St. John’s Wort Flower is a sort of year round super power. So, let this gift from Mother Nature help you step back from the stress and breathe. To soothe your mounting stress, boil the kettle and mix up a calming blend of St. John’s Wort, lemon balm leaves, and valerian. If you’re looking for an antibacterial remedy, you can use St. John’s Wort oil. If infusing your own oil, be sure to use fresh or freshly wilted St. John’s Wort as the oil extracted from dried St. John’s wort will not have effects you are looking for. Try preparing some healing salves before enjoying your weekend hike by mixing St. John’s Wort oil, beeswax, vitamin E oil, and your favourite essential oil. Or, try combining St. John’s Wort oil with jojoba oil, rosemary antioxidant, and your choice of essential oils blend to create a healing face serum that will definitely show your skin some love. With the do-it-all attitude of today’s society, we need to remember to take the time to invest in us. That way, our minds and bodies are capable of giving back to our world and those around us, just as nature does for us. So brighten your day with a bright friend, St. John’s Wort. It’s time to nurture your body and soul.
